The Japan Times - How an AFP beach snap became emblem of Europe's wildfire summer

His instinct was to photograph, but he did not expect one of his lakeside snapshots to go around the world within hours.

"I didn't think it was going to be that big," Lamy told AFP.

"I'm just overwhelmed."

He whipped out his phone walking along the lake beach from his parked car to a restaurant in the resort town of Lacanau.

"It happened very quickly, because I was moving fast. My daughter was very hungry and she was telling me, 'Dad, stop taking photos, I've had enough,'" he said.

The image looked "apocalyptic" and was deeply symbolic, said Lamy.

The photo shows a vacationing couple seated in striped deck chairs beneath a brightly coloured parasol on a beach.

They calmly watch a huge column of smoke rise in the background, casting an orange glow across the sky. The man slouches in his chair with his legs crossed, while the woman holds up her phone. Beach gear lies scattered around them.

- 'Just in case' -

Commentators said the picture stood as a symbol of the devastating French fires -- but had also become a political and social commentary on problems including climate inaction.

Some tried to imagine a dialogue between the man and woman in the picture.

Others came up with captions including "Don't Look Up," a reference to the 2021 film starring Leonardo Di Caprio parodying societal apathy to the climate crisis.

"France wildfires... and the world around us," Ian Bremmer, president of the political risk consultancy Eurasia Group, said on social media.

Le Figaro said that reality had arranged itself into "an allegory."

"The catastrophe occupies almost the entire image and yet somehow appears relegated to the background," the French daily said, adding the photo painted an uncomfortable portrait of a generation.

"The man's crossed legs might evoke indifference, the phone a culture of emptiness, the parasol a comfort people cling to," it said.

- 'End of the world' -

Lamy said he understood the strong response.

"It's just symbolic of the era," he said.

He said the couple appeared to be watching the unfolding disaster as if it were a movie, from the comfort of their living room.

"This is the end of the world and they feel fine," he said.

But Lamy, who has worked for AFP for over 20 years, warned commentators against rushing to judge the couple.

"I don't want to blame them," he said.

"Nobody knows what they actually thought."

Lamy said they were probably "powerless" and did not know what to do.

"And maybe their kids were just right there playing in the water," he added.

Some people online said the image was so striking that they thought it was AI-generated.

Lamy said the photo was not altered.

"I think we just cropped it a little bit on the sides," he said. "Otherwise, there is no modification."

Lamy said he loved to take pictures in his free time and his passion was street photography.

"And it turned out I was just a beach photographer on that day."
