GTA VI draws political criticism online as preorder estimates exceed five million

Some conservative gaming commentators are criticizing Grand Theft Auto VI over its characters and creative direction ahead of its November 19 release. The reaction is not uniform, while a third-party estimate puts preorders at 5.28 million copies.

Rockstar Games' forthcoming Grand Theft Auto VI has become the subject of an online dispute about gender, representation and the direction of the long-running franchise. Some commentators have objected to its female protagonist and scenes featuring its central couple, although other prominent figures on the right have declined to judge the game before playing it.

The release is scheduled for November 19, following a 13-year wait since Grand Theft Auto V and several delays. Information available before launch includes leaks, trailers and a 27-minute extended preview on Netflix. Rockstar creatives have described an intention to reflect the diversity of the Miami-inspired setting and give the female lead a developed role.

The two principal characters are Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval. They are in a relationship that changes according to player choices, and Lucia is the franchise's first mandatory female protagonist.

A scene in which Lucia asks Jason to help choose an outfit prompted complaints on X. One account, @Wokenessisevil, criticized the exchange on the Tuesday before publication. Other users questioned Jason's characterization because he refers to sequins and cocktails, arguing that his dialogue did not sound convincingly masculine.

A gaming YouTuber separately objected to footage showing Jason without a shirt, contending that Rockstar was trying to appeal to women and gay men. Another commentator criticized the lighting as a vehicle for an ideological message. Those interpretations concern preview material rather than an independently established account of the unreleased game's overall content.

Some posts have focused on Lucia's appearance or on women employed by Rockstar. WIRED documented comments about her body, sexist jokes about a female lead and an AI-generated alteration of cover imagery that replaced a woman of color with a white woman in a bikini.

Disputes about representation in the series predate the current previews. In the 2022 remastered version of GTA V, Rockstar removed jokes and non-player characters that critics had described as transphobic. Some fans objected to those changes.

After the company released a GTA VI trailer in 2023, online users also circulated an unsupported claim that Lucia was transgender. Last month, former gaming executive Mark Kern, who campaigns against what he describes as woke entertainment, called Lucia attractive and received racist and misogynistic replies from some followers, according to WIRED.

A photograph of female employees at Rockstar's Scottish studio has also resurfaced in criticism of the new game. The company originally shared the image in 2019 for International Women's Day. Its later circulation has included claims blaming women on staff for the franchise's perceived creative changes.

The dispute over the Scottish staff photograph has persisted despite its age. It was a workplace image posted years before the current release campaign, and the claims attached to its renewed circulation are accusations by online commentators rather than evidence about individual employees' creative decisions.

The present arguments differ from earlier controversies surrounding Grand Theft Auto. Parents and activists previously challenged the series for its depictions of sex, violence and crime. Elon Musk has said that shooting police officers as a character prevented him from getting into GTA V.

WIRED compared the advance criticism with earlier objections to allegedly progressive elements in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. The comparison was part of the publication's interpretation of recurring entertainment disputes, not evidence that the two releases have the same audience or will produce the same commercial outcome.

Some critics have also accused Rockstar of embracing identity politics or of avoiding jokes directed at marginalized groups. Those objections concern reported creative priorities. The previews, staff photograph and individual social-media exchanges do not by themselves establish how every character or storyline will appear in the finished game.

Concerns about women and LGBTQ developers have been a recurring feature of some gaming debates since Gamergate in 2014. The long development period for GTA VI has given critics an extended period in which to discuss an anticipated release before its complete content can be assessed.

The response among right-wing streamers has nevertheless been divided. Zack Hoyt, known as Asmongold, and white nationalist Nick Fuentes have taken a wait-and-see position. Fuentes also dismissed a viewer's complaint about the game's direction during a livestream, rather than joining calls to condemn it.

The commercial figures cited in the report come from a third party, not a Rockstar sales announcement. Analytics firm Sensor Tower estimated that GTA VI had sold 5.28 million preorders and generated more than $500 million in revenue.

The development budget has been reported at more than $1 billion, with outside commentary suggesting that strong early sales could recover that expenditure rapidly. Those assessments are forecasts; neither the ultimate sales performance nor the extent of any boycott can be determined before release.

Rockstar did not immediately respond to WIRED's request for comment. The available evidence documents a set of online objections and substantial estimated advance demand, without establishing that the political criticism has materially reduced sales.
